How do I know how much cannabis to use?

Even your doctor might not know the exact answer. This is because each person processes cannabinoids differently based upon their body, their metabolism, and even what they’ve recently eaten. This is why it’s always best to start low and go slow. We recommend newbies starting with no more than 2 milligrams of THC. Since edibles can take up to two hours to kick in be sure to go slow and not to take more thinking the first dose wasn’t enough. Remember that different strains and different modalities (smoking, edibles, beverages) can all effect you differently even if they each have the same THC content. So, start low and go slow!

How can I use cannabis to help me sleep?

Using cannabis to assist with sleeping is a personal exploration. Some patients have found that an indica leaning strain with THC can relax the body and aid with falling asleep. There has been research on THC and sleep and preliminary findings show that indeed some THC strains can assist with falling asleep but there is a risk. THC can also reduce the quality of REM sleep necessary for mental processing. So, some patients prefer CBD to calm the body and reduce the anxiety. If your a person who falls asleep fine but wakes up in the middle of the night with your mind racing you might consider a high CBD low THC tincture like ACDC at Maine Cannabis Exchange. This has worked well for many patients. A few drops before bed can be an affordable long lasting sleep aid.

Why did cannabis make me more anxious?

Your body has a unique response to cannabis, because you have a unique endocannabinoid system. From what scientists have discovered to date, everyone has a different number and assortment of cannabinoid receptors scattered throughout the body that bind with the compounds found in cannabis. When this binding happens you can feel calm or anxious or euphoric. Your body also produces it’s own endocannabinoids which bind to your receptors. In addition, other things you consume can also bind there. So, depending upon what your body is making, what your ingesting, and things like your metabolism, your reaction to cannabis will be unique to you. So the best solution to find out which cannabis product will have the effect you desire is to do a little experimentation. Take a very small amount (a puff of flower or two drops of an MCE tincture, or 2mg of cannabinoids in the form of an edible for instance) and record how it makes you fell over the course of the following 8 hours without adding any other confounding things like alcohol, nicotine, caffein or more cannabis. If you don’t get any effect then double the dose the next day. Do this until you feel a response. If, on the other hand the effect is not what you want, like more anxiety, then try the processes again using a different modality (if you smoked then try tincture, etc). But always start with that same very low dosage. The combination of cannabinoids you take (CBN, CBG, THC, THCa etc) matters, as does the other molecules present in the forms of terpenes and flavonoids. So asking a knowledgeable budtender can help point you in the right direction to a strain or tincture that might work right for calming your anxiety.

What part of the Marijuana plant is used?

Every part of the marijuana plant can and should be used! The unpollinated flower is the most valuable part of the plant because it contains sticky resin glands called trichomes where most of the cannabinoids and like THC and the plants flavors/smells come from. Cannabis seeds are rich in fatty acids and minerals and can be eaten raw, cooked, or ground into flour. The leaves are high in antioxidants, polyphenols and have mild antibiotic properties and can be juiced or eaten raw or steamed. The high fiber stems contain trace amounts of cannabinoids and can be made into medicinal tea and used for making textiles and rope. The roots contain trace amounts of cannabinoids and can be dried and made into medicinal tea that can be helpful with joint pain and inflammation.
